The tri-challenge was a very successful event and fun to be apart of. We checked into the volunteer booth at 8am and got our gear for the day which included water, fruit, a hat and a bright orange marshall vest. Our station was in the middle of a pasture behind someone's farm - so after checking in, we drove up the road to find our post and get settled in. The run portion of the race was last (after mountain biking and kayaking), so we had about 2 hours to kill before we saw our first runner. Zach and I played cards, read and chipped golf balls in the manure before the 1st place guy came running our way. We had our water cups ready and handed them out as runner after runner passed us. We tried to keep count as they passed, but eventually gave up. Towards the end, one guy was running without any shoes and I said, "Hey, you're shoeless!" and he said, "Don't even ask, mate!" Hmm...wonder what happened to him along the way.
After about 3 hours of passing out water, the last exhausted runner came by and then we packed up and headed to the sausage sizzle in town where they did the awards ceremony. There were some really great athletes who participated and then a lot of people who just do it every year for the sheer fun. Zach and I are doing our 1/2 marathon on October 10th in San Luis Obispo, CA and this race only makes us more excited! Or for me, excited that it will be over soon!
