Seventeen Seventy...such a funny name for a town. But what a great place it is! Not only is the history interesting, it is one of the most beautiful coastlines we have ever seen. First, for a short history lesson - Captain James Cook and his crew, aboard the Endeavor ship, made their second Australia landing here in May of 1770. Apparently the views weren't as spectacular as I thought, because they left early the next morning to continue on their voyage. 1770 and Agnes Water (sister town) are now regarded as the birthplace of Queensland.
After about an hour and a half drive, we arrived at Agnes Water and quickly discovered it is a big backpacker/caravan/camping destination. Everywhere we looked, we saw rented campervans that were brightly painted and heard lots of different foreign accents. A small shopping center made up the center of town as well as numerous hostel and backpacker shacks. We decided to spend the first couple of hours on the beach. After we started to feel the burn, we did a bit of rock climbing out to the tip of the cove and then had a nice peanut butter and jelly picnic lunch.
After lunch, we drove about 3 kilometers north to 1770. This town is much smaller (after Agnes, we didn't think you could get much smaller, but it's true). There was a beautiful park area and the water was a gorgeous aqua blue. Sand strips and sailboats filled the bay area. We first drove to the point of the peninsula, which reminded me of a mini version of Point Loma. From the top, we hiked down one side of the mountain and found a nice private beach with lots of rocks. We figured we would try our luck at fishing. Well, after 3 casts, the only nibbles we got were from small minnows. So, we hiked back to the top and went down to the other side of the mountain and found a much nicer private beach that I would have given anything to spend a few days on. It was pristine! The only problem was there was no way to get down there. (see pictures - you'll know which one I'm talking about)
After 1770, we drove back through Agnes and had a relaxing coffee and ice cream break at a local cafe. After feeling rejuvenated, we headed out of town so Zach could get a quick 9-hole golf round in. The course was extremely well-maintained and I actually had a great time, too! (I usually do, because I just get to drive the cart and relax) You'll see from the pictures that we had some kangaroo friends on the course as well. It was really cool to be so close to them! Luckily, they avoided any crushing drives from Zach. :)
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY MOM, MO AND PATTY...
AND ALL THE OTHER MOMS!
